Why are Plaid Cymru so reluctant to sever all links with the undemocratic, corrupt English monarchy and declare themselves republicans, especially when their membership is overwhelmingly republican?
They've never had a decisive internal vote to settle the question because it could alienate soft‑nationalists or culturally conservative voters.
Support for the monarchy is rapidly declining in Cymru; people are rightly starting to ask if it is ethical for Plaid Cymru to continue to play it safe by sitting on the fence on this issue.
Perhaps the time has come for members of all Welsh nationalist parties to establish republican branches and openly debate the question of republicanism with those who oppose it or those who continue to sit on the fence within their parties.
